Strengthening Trade & Investment Ties between UK and India.

Held on 5th March 2025 at the historic City Chambers in Edinburgh, the India-Scotland Business Meet 2025 served as a platform to explore synergies between India and Scotland across multiple sectors, with a special spotlight on agro-beverages, trade, investment and sustainable enterprise development.

Our Chairman, Manoj Karkhanis, had the distinct honour of attending this event, as Speyside Capital continue align its efforts with key stakeholders and thought leaders to shape the future of Indian and Scottish trade relations.

This year’s event was significant, particularly given India’s increasing prominence as the world’s number one Scotch Whisky export market by volume. With the agro-beverages sector emerging as a cornerstone of Scottish exports, the event highlighted the mutual benefits of deepening cooperation, alongside discussions around supply chain integration, investment opportunities, technology exchange and sustainable practices in manufacturing and exports.

As Manoj Karkhanis noted during the event, “The strength of international partnerships lies in our shared commitment to progress. By building bridges across borders, we unlock the potential to create more inclusive, resilient and prosperous futures for our industries, communities and the generations to come.”

Sustainability in Scotch whisky isn’t just a trend – it’s a priority for the entire industry, and is an area that Speyside Capital are committed to ensuring is recognised in everything we do. After all, the environment is the source of what makes Scotch Whisky truly special. We are closely following the progress being made in this area, as the Scotch whisky sector currently places focus on long-term practices that not only ensure profitability but also minimise environmental impact, safeguarding the future of both the industry and the planet.

A Scotch Whisky Industry and Agriculture Collaboration To Drive Sustainability

A recent roundtable discussion hosted by representatives from the Agriculture industry and Scotch Whisky industry focused on ways to collaborate for a sustainable and profitable future for all. The meeting provided a platform for identifying areas where the two sectors could align their sustainability goals, particularly as they work towards achieving net-zero targets.

Sustainable supply chain transformation

During the roundtable, significant challenges faced by both the farming community and the Scotch whisky industry were acknowledged , particularly regarding emission reduction and supply chain transformation. The Scotch whisky sector’s net-zero targets, which extend across all operations, including agriculture, are crucial to reducing the industry’s overall carbon footprint.

Key areas such as reducing emissions, improving resource management and fostering biodiversity were highlighted as opportunities for mutual collaboration to drive substantial emission reductions and create a resilient, sustainable supply chain that supports long-term profitability and longevity.

Looking Ahead: Sustainability Enhancing Scotch Whisky Investment

As distilleries adopt eco-friendly practices such as carbon-neutral production, regenerative agriculture and renewable energy, it’s anticipated that whisky casks will become more than just a luxury commodity, but a representation of values and morals within investors.

The opportunity to invest in such a valuable, ethically produced asset is anticipated to attract an even wider pool of investors globally, putting further pressure on demand v supply and thus, impacting the value and scarcity of Scotch Whisky as an alternative asset.

With global demand for sustainably produced spirits rising at rapid rates, it also gives space for premium, eco-conscious whisky brands to command higher market prices.

Overall, sustainability is a welcomed an exciting space for the Scotch Whisky Industry. It’s hoped this close collaboration between the industry and those at the source of the product will allow for continued and fruitful growth, while preserving the environment that makes Scotch Whisky so special.  We will continue to monitor the progress of this within the industry, and look forward to seeing future developments as they unfold.

Scotch whisky continues to assert its dominance in the global spirits market, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) increase of 5.2% in volume predicted from 2023 – 2028, according to a recent study released by GlobalData, Next-Gen Beverages: Bridging Affordability, Sensory, and Gen Z Preferences.

This robust growth reflects broader trends in the spirits category, which is poised to outpace beer and wine in global market share as consumer preferences shift toward premium, high-quality beverages.

One of the driving forces behind this growth is the significant consumer shift toward premium and super-premium spirits. These categories, which include artisanal and high-quality products, have experienced notable value growth—up 1.8% in 2022 compared to 2018. This trend highlights an increasing willingness among consumers to invest in luxury, crafted products, with Scotch whisky standing out as a top choice in the premium segment.

Markets in Asia, particularly China and India, are emerging as critical drivers for Scotch whisky’s growth. With a rising middle class and expanding consumer interest in luxury goods, these markets are showing strong potential for future expansion. Asia’s growing appetite for premium Scotch whisky aligns perfectly with the category’s ongoing focus on delivering high-quality products.

Brands are also aligning with shifting consumer priorities by emphasizing sustainability in production. This commitment to environmentally conscious practices not only resonates with today’s consumers but also solidifies Scotch whisky’s reputation as a responsible and forward-thinking industry leader.

As the spirits market evolves, Scotch whisky remains resilient at the forefront of the premium and super-premium segments. With ongoing innovation, sustainability efforts and expansion into developing markets, the industry is well-positioned to maintain its strong growth trajectory.

While the broader premiumisation trend in the spirits industry shows signs of slowing, Scotch whisky continues to cement its position as a status symbol and a resilient force in the global market.

According to IWSR, status spirits—defined as those retailing for $100 or more—remain robust, driven by the enduring allure of both affordable luxury and ultra-rare, collectible expressions.

The $100–$500 category, representing the “affordable luxury” tier, has seen strong value growth, appealing to consumers seeking prestige without breaking the bank.

Simultaneously, the ultra-rare market – dominated by bottles priced above $5,000 – has experienced the fastest growth, fuelled by collectors and investors eager to own unique Scotch whisky expressions.

Despite slowing premiumisation, in 2023, the value of status spirits grew by an impressive 9%, with Scotch whisky playing a key role in this upward trajectory. Both Scotch malt and blended whisky have emerged as the most resilient categories within the macro segment of status spirits.

This resilience has been underpinned by several key factors:

  • Post-COVID Recovery in Travel Retail: As global travel has resumed, duty-free sales have become a significant driver for Scotch whisky, offering travellers exclusive access to premium expressions.
  • Innovative Product Development: Leading Scotch whisky brands continue to innovate with limited editions and unique cask finishes, capturing the attention of both connoisseurs and casual consumers.
  • Emerging Market Growth: Developing markets such as Nigeria and Brazil are contributing to Scotch whisky’s global growth. As disposable incomes rise in these regions, consumers are increasingly drawn to the sophistication and prestige associated with Scotch whisky.

Scotch whisky’s unique position as both a luxury product and an investment asset solidifies its appeal. Whether it’s affordable luxury offerings or ultra-rare collectables, the category continues to thrive, proving that the allure of Scotch whisky is as timeless as the spirit itself. If you have not already done so, join our free online portal to learn more.

For investors and enthusiasts alike, Scotch whisky represents a robust opportunity in an evolving spirits landscape. At Speyside Capital, we’re committed to helping you navigate these opportunities, offering access to premium casks that are as resilient as the industry they represent.

In an ever-changing landscape, investors are exploring new ways to grow and protect their investments. Among the many opportunities available, Scotch whisky has emerged as a fantastic alternative asset. Investing in Scotch whisky, whether through casks or rare bottles, combines a centuries-old craft with modern financial potential. Let’s dive into the top five reasons to invest in alternative assets and why whisky deserves to be a highly considered option in your portfolio.

1. Diversification Beyond Traditional Markets

One of the most significant reasons to invest in whisky is its ability to enhance portfolio diversification. Traditional assets like stocks and bonds are often subject to market volatility and economic cycles. Whisky investments, on the other hand, tend to have a low correlation with these traditional markets. This means they can act as a buffer during periods of market turbulence, reducing overall portfolio risk and providing more stable returns.

2. Inflation Protection

Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money, making it a critical consideration for long-term investors. Whisky casks, in particular, not only appreciate over time due to the ageing process but also tend to retain their value during inflationary periods. As the whisky matures, its quality and market value tend to increase, making it an attractive hedge against rising prices.

3. Potential for Higher Returns

While traditional investments may offer unpredictable returns, whisky often provides the opportunity for more stable, higher yields. Whisky casks and rare bottles can appreciate significantly over time, especially when sourced from reputable distilleries, such as those that Speyside Capital have strong relationships with. Investors who carefully select premium casks or limited-edition releases can achieve robust returns based on historical performance, driven by growing global demand and limited supply. It’s important to ensure you have reliable and informed support with brand and cask selection.

4. Access to a Unique and Tangible Market

Scotch Whisky is a niche market that, with the right contact, can provide access to very exclusive investment opportunities that are unavailable through traditional channels. The tangible nature of Scotch whisky investments also adds to their appeal, providing a physical asset that investors will be able to track, store and even enjoy.

5. Portfolio Resilience in Economic Downturns

During economic downturns, traditional investments often face significant losses. Scotch Whisky investments, however, have proven in the past to hold or increase in value during such times. The intrinsic value of aged whisky and its enduring demand make it a resilient choice for risk-conscious investors looking to weather economic challenges. o

Top Five Reasons to Invest in Alternative Assets Speyside Capital
The Bottom Line

Investing in whisky isn’t just for enthusiasts; it’s a practical strategy for anyone looking to diversify their portfolio, hedge against inflation and gain access to a unique market. However, as with any investment, due diligence is key. Understanding the whisky market, evaluating risks and aligning your investment choices with your financial goals are essential.

Scotch whisky, with its rich heritage and diverse flavours, is a beloved spirit in the United States. But what drives this enduring affection? Let’s explore some of the key reasons the US love Scotch, with it a firm favourite from the shelves.

Variety of Flavours Compared To Bourbon

In comparison to the regularly sweet and rich profiles of Bourbon, Scotch whisky offers an unparalleled diversity of flavours ranging from smooth and sweet to bold and smoky. This variety comes from regional differences in production methods, ingredients, and maturation processes which is a highly attractive narrative to U.S. enthusiasts who are seeking a sophisticated and exploratory whisky experience.

Heritage and Craftsmanship

The US loves Scotch partly because of its deep heritage and tie to the true Scottish experience. Every cask of Scotch represents centuries of tradition and expertise. Scottish distilleries, each have their unique character and their timeless appeal resonates heavily with US consumers alongside the beautiful landscape.

Quality and Premium Spirit

Perhaps most importantly, Scotch whisky is deemed a premium spirit, with strict regulations governing its production. From the minimum three-year aging, these standards ensure a consistently high-quality product. For many Americans, Scotch embodies sophistication and is often chosen to mark special occasions or enjoyed as a luxury treat.

Why the US Loves Scotch Speyside Capital
Scotch Whisky as an Investment Opportunity

Beyond enjoying Scotch for its taste and history, a growing number of US investors are recognising Scotch whisky as a lucrative alternative investment asset.

  • Growing Global Demand: The increasing popularity of Scotch, particularly in emerging markets, has created strong demand, driving up the value of rare bottles and aged casks.
  • Tangible Asset Appeal: Unlike stocks or bonds, whisky casks and collectible bottles are tangible assets that investors can physically own. This adds an element of security and tangibility to their portfolios.
  • Appreciation Over Time: The longer Scotch whisky ages, the more complex its flavour becomes, and the higher its market value. Informed investors in the US are tapping into this dynamic to achieve significant returns.
  • Heritage Investment: Investing in whisky is not just about financial returns; it’s about being part of the history. This makes it a particularly appealing choice for those who love Scotch and want to support its legacy.

Speyside Whisky Region is nestled in the Moray area around the River Spey in northeast Scotland. It is home to over 50 whisky distilleries, the highest concentration in any Scotch whisky region. Originally considered a sub-region of the Highlands, however, the 2009 regulations established Speyside as its own entity, recognising its distinctiveness. Today, the region celebrates its heritage with the annual Spirit of Speyside festival in late April.

The region’s rich whisky history began after the Excise Act of 1823, when George Smith and his son John Gordon Smith obtained the first legal license to distill whisky in the Highlands.

Whisky production flourished in Speyside due to its abundant water and grain resources. However, the real boost came with the expansion of the Great North railway in the late 19th century, which provided easy access to coal (reducing reliance on peat) and opened up markets in London and beyond.

We’ve taken the time to analyse our Top 10 Speyside Distilleries, and we thought it was only right we share them with you…

1. Glenfarclas Distillery

In 1973 it became one of the first in Scotland to open a visitor centre, offering tours for everyone from beginners to enthusiasts, ensuring a warm welcome for all.

The distillery is now managed by the fifth generation of the Grant family and is known for its innovative marketing and sustainability efforts, including converting distillery trucks to run on bio-gas. Glenfiddich uses 43 handmade copper pot stills and sources water from the Robbie Dhu springs. At Benromach Distillery, a family-owned operation established in 1898 simplicity and craftsmanship define their approach. Utilising just four ingredients—barley, water, yeast, and a human touch—the distillery produces award-winning whisky through a handmade process guided by skilled distillers who rely on their senses and experience.

Honouring traditional Speyside methods, the distillery malts barley with a touch of peat smoke. This subtle smokiness adds depth and complexity to their whiskies.

Their core range reflects this tradition, while the Contrasts range offers limited editions and single cask releases. These variations showcase new processes and barley types, providing whisky enthusiasts with fresh experiences to explore.

Whether you’re a seasoned investor or new to the world of alternative investments, having an experienced alternative asset manager is crucial for success.

As more investors seek to diversify their portfolios away from traditional markets, Whisky Cask Investment is rapidly on the rise with the allure of owning a tangible asset that matures and appreciates over time capturing the attention of investors globally.

It’s no secret that investing in alternative assets like whisky casks offers a unique opportunity to diversify your portfolio, safeguard against market fluctuations and achieve impressive returns. Its ever-growing demand and finite supply have bolstered Whisky Casks into a highly sought-after and lucrative asset class. However, navigating the intricacies of whisky cask investment requires a deep understanding of the industry, regulations, compliance and more – something an experienced alternative asset manager should be able to provide you.

1. Niche and Unique Alternative Asset

Scotch Whisky Casks are not your typical asset class. The Scotch whisky market is a specialised and intricate ecosystem, requiring deep knowledge of distilleries, cask maturation processes and market trends. Unlike other assets, whisky casks vary in value based on factors such as distillery reputation, age, type of wood and region. Ensuring your alternative asset manager understands these nuances and is equipped to guide you in selecting casks that have the greatest potential for appreciation is absolutely crucial.

2. Access to Exclusive and Rare Opportunities

It’s all about relationships! The most sought-after whisky casks are rarely available to the public, making it difficult for individual investors to secure desirable casks on their own. Ensuring your alternative asset manager specialising in Whisky is backed by a network of industry connections that can provide you access to exclusive opportunities is another key component to success.

3. Due Diligence and Compliance

While Scotch whisky casks can offer strong returns, it’s important to understand that Scotch Whisky is one of the most heavily regulated spirits in the world. There are multiple regulations surrounding Scotch Whisky, from creation of the spirit all the way through to bottling.

Ensuring your casks will be stored in a government-bonded warehouse in Scotland is crucial. During that storage time, managing the maturation of the Whisky and assessing the quality of the Whisky over time are also fundamental. An experienced alternative asset manager will conduct rigorous due diligence, including evaluating the cask’s origin, quality and potential for appreciation. They also oversee the ongoing management of the casks, ensuring they are stored under optimal conditions to maximise value. Our turn-key solution here at Speyside Capital sets us apart, taking care of everything so you have complete peace of mind your investment is in safe hands.

4. Mitigating Market Volatility

Alternative assets like Scotch whisky casks are often valued for their ability to hedge against traditional market volatility. However, this doesn’t mean that whisky casks are immune to broader market trends. An experienced alternative asset manager monitors market fluctuations and shifts in global demand to protect their clients’ investments. By staying ahead of market trends, they should offer timely advice on when to buy, hold or sell, ensuring that the investment remains resilient in both favourable and challenging conditions
