What is my Cask of Whisky Worth?
At Speyside Capital, determining the value of a whisky cask involves a few straightforward steps:
Total Liquid Volume: We start by measuring the entire amount of liquid inside the cask.
Alcohol by Volume (ABV): This percentage indicates the strength of the whisky.
To calculate the amount of pure alcohol in the cask, we use a simple formula:
- Multiply the total volume of liquid by the ABV (expressed as a decimal). For instance, if a cask holds 200 litres of whisky with an ABV of 50%, the calculation would be 200 litres x 0.50 = 100 litres of pure alcohol.
This pure alcohol figure is a key industry standard for valuing casks and is also used by HMRC to determine any applicable duties if the cask is removed from storage.
By considering this measure along with factors like the whisky’s age, rarity, and overall quality, Speyside Capital ensures a fair and accurate valuation for every cask.
